I’ve met quite a lot of young people who are just embarking on their quest for a career, going into university and undergraduate studies, who don’t believe in career planning. They figure they’ll get a degree and then just remain flexible and take whatever great job they’ll be offered.
I believe these people are making a mistake.
Career planning isn’t just saying “ok, so I’m going to be a… lawyer”, or a doctor, or a puppeteer. It’s about looking at long term goals, and setting short-term ones to get there. But the beauty is that it’s a continuous process, so it’s important to keep refining and changing your plan as you move along. And this is good because, it keeps you flexible but also on the right track, forcing you to figure out what you want and don’t want to do with your life.
I think the people who believe that career planning is for those who know what they want, and who say that keeping a totally open perspective without planning anything can open more doors for you, are totally wrong.
What do you think?
