Career planning is a good idea (Discussion)

oLahav saidThu, 21 Aug 2008 20:01:37 -0000 ( Link )

I’ve met quite a lot of young people who are just embarking on their quest for a career, going into university and undergraduate studies, who don’t believe in career planning. They figure they’ll get a degree and then just remain flexible and take whatever great job they’ll be offered.

I believe these people are making a mistake.

Career planning isn’t just saying “ok, so I’m going to be a… lawyer”, or a doctor, or a puppeteer. It’s about looking at long term goals, and setting short-term ones to get there. But the beauty is that it’s a continuous process, so it’s important to keep refining and changing your plan as you move along. And this is good because, it keeps you flexible but also on the right track, forcing you to figure out what you want and don’t want to do with your life.

I think the people who believe that career planning is for those who know what they want, and who say that keeping a totally open perspective without planning anything can open more doors for you, are totally wrong.

What do you think?

I agree with you oLahav only that certainly career planning is easier for those that know what they want. But for those who don’t know what they want they too should be career planning. This will help them ensure that they are not spending too much time chasing rainbows and looking/waiting or doors to open. If you ever watched Most Extreme Elimination Challenge you will know that not every door you open will be a good one. It is important to lay out a career development plan so that there is more chance of opening up a positive door rather than one that leads to a monster or a pitfall.

I think “career planning” is a good idea if you know what you want and if you have an idea of the goals you need to get there. This includes work experience, what you have to study, and basically being prepared for what is necessary for that job.

If you’re open to career possibilities, however, you should focus more on what you want out of your career rather than the title of a job.

Although I agree that career planning is very important, how do I teach my son of the importance when he has no idea what he wants to do with his life.

We’ve discussed his strengths, of which there are many but he fails to show an active interest in anything for the future.

true! its better to first analyze what one’s passion and then proceed in that direction beacause i’ve experienced letting myself being open to a number of options and finally ended up in a lot of confusion.

Well my views are a bit of mixed! in my case I HAVEN’T PLANNED MY CAREER as something or the other turns up and things take a turn or go in the opposite direction. for years during college i had no clue as in what to opt for and what do i plan for my ‘future’.... i decided to explore things till i find what holds my interest and will keep me in forever! after grad i took a years break and now im an intern for my professor who believes i have a lot of caliber which i doubt as i don believe in self – glorification!! as a student i fell in love with psychology as a subject and now i feel i want to pursue it as a career! next yr i will apply fr masters in clinical psych and NOTE: i still “HAVEN’T PLANNED MY FUTURE CAREER” i dunno if im right or wrong but my parents are supportive and i know what im doing! :)

Career planning is very much necessay to move on in our life and with out career planning we will end up in a different world with lot of confusions.

To achieve some thing in our life we should plan it and den move towards achieving it…..........simply planning and thinking that I will be this or that is a waste.
